Ghosts on the grand canal

This photo was a little unexpected. The trip earlier this year to Venice was the first time I used the lee big stopper and I was hand holding it in front of the lens. I was having a hard time getting it right. This is one of the few successful shots I have, most of them are just a mess. I find the river and the boats look very ghostly in this photo.

Gondola Repair Station

So many visitors to Venice never venture more than a few minutes from the major attractions, it’s a bit of a shame considering there are so many cool things on the side canals.

Venetian Towers

There are loads of towers all over Venice, some of them lean like the one in Pisa and you can get to the top of some of them for some great views of the city.

Canals and Boats

Venice has a main touristy area that stretches out around San Marco square and the Rialto bridge, venture further beyond that and it’s still just as beautiful and there are way less tourists crowding your photos.

Da Vinci Inventions

On our recent trip to Venice, they had an interesting exhibition on some of Leonardo Da Vinci’ inventions. He was a bit ahead of his time this guy. Here’s my take on Da Vinci, he invented the time machine, went back to way back when and planted the seed for modern machines that we live with now. Pretty far fetched idea I know.

Grand Canal

Last one from Venice for a bit, I’ll do something different tomorrow, I don’t like posting too many photos from the same place in a row, I normally only do that when I am in the place.

Strange Result

I used a couple of filters on this photo, I know they say never stack filters, there’s many things they say about photography that I don’t pay much attention to anymore. I’m not really sure who I mean by they, the pros I guess.

I used a lee big stopper and then a Graduated ND to darken the sky and for some odd reason it came out very purple. The other odd thing about this image is the long trails in the water are boats moving up and down the canal, but there is one boat that is still sort of visible. My best guess is that it was just kind of floating there.

Reflections in the Canal

When I visit a place for a second, third or umpteenth time I find myself being much more selective with what I photograph. I look more for specific things, the first time I went to Venice I went with no ideas on what or where I wanted to photograph, this time around I had a couple of things in mind. Reflections was one of them and the other was smooth silky water with the aid of filters, the second one isn’t working out too well, the Fuji lenses have writing on the inside which is reflecting onto the filters. Simple resolution is I am off to find a shop that sells black electrical tape or a black marker pen.

Evening Stroll

We started yesterday in Como and finished in Venice, ever since Max has been around I find myself taking more photos of him and people in general.

Venice From Up High

And to round off the week of seascapes here’s another one from Venice, it’s appropriate since we will be back there for easter in a few days.

I’ve done these theme weeks a few times in the past and it’s a little easier for me to select a photo every day, with such a big library it can be sometimes difficult to choose what to share.
