Shooting into the sun

I often find myself talking photos like this, most of them are never any good, I like the fact that the sun has somehow swallowed a massive mountain and only left a little visible in this photo.

Middle of the Arch

I’m not sure what they call this natural arch, it’s in Spitzkoppe, maybe it’s the Spitzkoppe arch, yeah I could google it but I like that name so I’m going stick with it.

Yes I’m going a little crazy on the Namibia photos at the moment, that’s cause I never really sorted them out properly after I got back, I had over 30000 photos to sort through. With so much shooting I tend to organise my travel Lightroom library into separate folders for each time I copy the images from the memory cards and call the folders DL1, DL2 and so on. The reason behind this is simple battery power on the laptop is limited, and charging isn’t a regular thing in the bush. So I don’t want to waste my time backing up the entire photo set each time. I could let Lightroom make a second copy on import, but this is pretty slow. So I prefer to copy the folder full of raw images after the import is complete.

Spitzkoppe as the Sun Rises

If you’ve seen the movie 10’000 BC then you’ve seen this mountain. It’s a rather prominent mountain that stands pretty much by itself in the central area of Namibia. The best part about it is that you camp in amongst all the rocks in the area. It’s a very peaceful place to be. Just you, nature and a few good friends.

Shooting into the Sun

I’ve been a little busy over the last few days, not only is work hectic but I’m giving a talk on photography and travelling in Africa this week, so have been trying to prepare for that. It’s the first time that I do something like this so we’ll see how it goes.

Shooting into the sun can be a little tough, in most instances the foreground will be dark. Even with the amazing dynamic range available on the Nikon D800 you won’t get a photo like this with conventional shooting, this is a 5 frame HDR shot processed in photomatix.

Redoing old shots

I went back to Spitzkoppe in Namibia and one of my favourite photos that I had was nearly exactly the same as this one. Somehow this one doesn’t have the same effect on me.

You can check out my portfolio, you’ll see the two photos.

Tomorrow we’re off to California for 2 weeks, i’m taking minimal gear so let’s see what we get.

Missing it

Well i’ve said it before, my photography and blog sometimes suffers because of commitments to the job. It pays the bills and finances the camera gear I buy and the trips I take so a little sacrifice has to be expected now and again.

I’ve only been back 3 weeks and I’m truly missing the wild.

Spitzkoppe Stars

The first time I visited Spitzkoppe, I never bothered to go to the stone arch. From where I saw it, it looked really small. Like many places in Namibia once you get close to something you realise how big it really is.

Different viewpoint

Probably one of the most photographed landscapes in Namibia is Spitzkoppe, I’ve seen hundreds of great photos of it. While getting a shot that is similar to those hundred others is ok. With a place like this you have to go and look for something unique.

I doubt many people would guess this was taken at Spitzkoppe.
