Happy Hyena

This guy was particularly happy and so were all of his mates, a massive giraffe carcasse and now lions around for a couple of days at least. We went back to this scene many times over a couple of days that we spent in Timbavati, we kept on returning as it was pretty cold and raining a bit, which meant most of the animals weren’t anywhere near water supplies so were impossible to find and see.

Battling Goshawks

This photo was taken quite a few years ago in the Kgalagadi national park in South Africa. A friend of mine is heading there soon, when we visited it was very cold, it got below zero at night and we ended up leaving earlier than planned as it was too cold for us.

Whats for lunch

You never know what you’re going to see when you are on Safari, sometimes you’ll see a bit of everything. Sometimes you’ll see a lot of one thing and not much of anything else. We spent a few nights at the Shindzela tented camp in Timbavati next to Kruger national park. We spent most of the time hanging out with this cackle of hyena who spent a good few days devouring this giraffe carcasse.

Winelands of South Africa

Well I still seem to be stuck on photos from our big trip, we spent a few nights in Franschoek with some friends. It’s very different to the rest of Africa, it’s kind of like being back in Europe.

Jackal Portrait

There is something unique about Jackals, they are always way more alert than the usual predators and their stare is piercing. They’re very focused animals and seem to enjoy posing for a camera, guess that’s comes from their inner dog.

This photo was taken on the South African side of the kgalagadi, it was the last border crossing we did on our big trip. The last 20 or so photos I have posted were from that trip, I missed a few countries so I will add them over the next few days.

Batman and Robin

Selecting a single photo from our time in South Africa is a little more difficult than the other countries, we spent close to 5 months there. We drove the coast from Sodwana bay to Cape Town about 3 times, went up the west coast, went through the middle, up and down the drakensberg. To the Highveld and Lowveld and that’s without even mentioning all the national parks we visited. A tremendous country to explore. You could spend years there and not cover the whole country.

This photo is of one of two Cheetah brothers known as Batman and Robin in the Mountain Zebra national park.

Bush Fires

It’s amazing how deceptive a photograph can be, this fire was very hot but not as big as it looks in this photo. I stepped over it on numerous occasions to take images from different angles.

Kometjie Lighthouse

This was a nice little spot on the cape peninsula away from the tourist crowds. The water was freezing, South African surfers are tough, there were a few out there practicing in the cold atlantic.

Stormy Ocean

This is from the first time we visited Storms River Mouth, it was definitely living up to its name. The waves were massive and crashing up against the rocks all along the coast. It was an awesome sight. I had some great fun standing out on the rocks trying to get shots of the waves crashing right up close.

De Hoop Sunset

Probably one of the lesser visited places in South Africa, De Hoop Nature Reserve, we saw a bit of wildlife here, it’s renowned for whale spotting.

This is the kind of place I like to visit, somewhere beautiful off the beaten track where not too many people go, they’re generally very unspoilt. Some places like this in South Africa, seemed a bit abandoned though, it felt a bit like they had been forgotten since the 80s. Which was kind of cool a bit of a blast from the past!!
