Glowing Alps

It’s been a few weeks since my last post, I’ve been distracted by other things as usual. As the temperature suddenly dropped and the snow came, I thought it would be nice to post a photo of some snowy alps.

Elephant March

This herd was on the move, probably headed for water but they weren’t stopping for anything.

Night Owl

On the last trip to Namibia I did some timelapse stuff, I still haven’t quite finished it, hopefully before the end of the year I will get it done. I found this shot in amongst the many and was pleasantly surprised how a little owl, most likely a pearly spotted owl, sat on this tree for a few frames.

Isola Superiore

Only a couple of hours drive from Zurich and you’re in this completely other world, Italy is way more relaxed than Zurich, it’s great to have such contrast so close together.

Swing on a beach

There’s something about the ocean that always makes you feel a little cooler, perhaps it’s the cool ocean breezes, not really sure. What I can say is that the lakes in Switzerland just don’t have the same effect, I go for a swim and cool off, that works but as soon as you are out, within a few minutes I’m sweating like I was before I got in, simple solution really, stay in the water :).

Leopard at Night

I’ve been sick for the last couple of days which is why there haven’t been any posts, got a case of the stomach flu, the joys of sending a little one to daycare.

I generally don’t post much about cameras and settings, but this shot is worth a mention. It was taken at 10000 ISO, 1/60 of a second handholding a 200-400 on a D4, the D4 can focus in near darkness and the VR really does work.

Gotta be keen

You have to be slightly mad to want to strap a giant catherine wheel to your back and run around in an LED suit, I saw these guys in the Auckland domain a couple of years ago and it was great to watch, a real cool mix of fireworks, lights, lasers and music.

Group F are the guys that put these show on.

Crashing Wave

I don’t recommend everyone do what I was doing with my camera in the Seychelles, my gear was getting pretty wet. I spent hours in the water with my camera or up close to the surf, luckily the waves are fairly timid there. I don’t have an underwater housing and all I did was wipe the camera down with a damp cloth to remove any salt residue. If you want to get unique shots you are going to have to put your camera and sometimes self at risk.

This shot was taken with a Nikon D4, a camera that can take a beating. I have treated most of my cameras this way including the non weather sealed ones, most of them have survived, dust, water and dirt can be wiped off the one thing that’s been effective at destroying my gear is dropping them. In the nearly 10 years I have been taking photographs I have destroyed 3 bodies and 2 lenses.
