Battling Goshawks

This photo was taken quite a few years ago in the Kgalagadi national park in South Africa. A friend of mine is heading there soon, when we visited it was very cold, it got below zero at night and we ended up leaving earlier than planned as it was too cold for us.

Crazy African Storms

Storms in Africa are great to watch they are very localised and most of the time they are off in the distance. Though if one does get close, they drop huge amounts of rain in a very short time.

Winelands of South Africa

Well I still seem to be stuck on photos from our big trip, we spent a few nights in Franschoek with some friends. It’s very different to the rest of Africa, it’s kind of like being back in Europe.

Jackal Portrait

There is something unique about Jackals, they are always way more alert than the usual predators and their stare is piercing. They’re very focused animals and seem to enjoy posing for a camera, guess that’s comes from their inner dog.

This photo was taken on the South African side of the kgalagadi, it was the last border crossing we did on our big trip. The last 20 or so photos I have posted were from that trip, I missed a few countries so I will add them over the next few days.

Last Bush Camp

One of the greatest things about overlanding is camping wherever you want, sometimes you find the most wonderful spots, on top of a hill, next to some cliffs, next to a river, on a deserted beach. Most of the time there is no one else around, this was the last time we bush camped on our trip. This was somewhere close to entrance to the Botswana side of the Kgalagadi transfrontier park. During the night while we slept in our roof tent, a hyena came and stole one of our camp chairs.

Meerkat Stare

Continuing our voyage, we return to Namibia, this time the we enter in the south and headed for the less visited tourist spots like fish river canyon and the quivertree forest, which is where we stumbled across these guys.

Kubu Island

Many overlanders finish their trips either in South Africa or they drive all the back to Europe, once we got to South Africa we weren’t done. We headed north into Botswana to see the central part of it, one of my favourite places in the centre of Botswana is Kubu island. A rocky outcrop in the middle of one of the massive salt pans, it has many twisted and distorted Baobabs growing on it.

Batman and Robin

Selecting a single photo from our time in South Africa is a little more difficult than the other countries, we spent close to 5 months there. We drove the coast from Sodwana bay to Cape Town about 3 times, went up the west coast, went through the middle, up and down the drakensberg. To the Highveld and Lowveld and that’s without even mentioning all the national parks we visited. A tremendous country to explore. You could spend years there and not cover the whole country.

This photo is of one of two Cheetah brothers known as Batman and Robin in the Mountain Zebra national park.

Eagles Nest

Malawi was a very different country to the rest of Africa, there are people everywhere and they cultivate every bit of land you can see. Lake Malawi is huge, you can’t see the other side and it has waves. It felt like a beach resort country which is exactly what we did, parked up on a beach for the better part of a week and relaxed, we tried roasting cashews or peanuts on an open fire, that’s about how productive we were when we stayed at the Eagles Next at Cape Maclear.
