Sitting in the Domain

Well I’ve got into the full swing of my new Job, and it’s been a pretty hectic couple of weeks. We’re heading back to NZ for christmas this year again, perhaps we’ll see some fireworks in the domain again.

Silo park at night

One of my favourite areas of Auckland is the waterfront, I used to work in this area years ago during school holidays, so it’s nice to see they’ve turned the old industrial area into this cool park.

Gotta be keen

You have to be slightly mad to want to strap a giant catherine wheel to your back and run around in an LED suit, I saw these guys in the Auckland domain a couple of years ago and it was great to watch, a real cool mix of fireworks, lights, lasers and music.

Group F are the guys that put these show on.

North Wharf

Like every other person with an interest in photography, I dabble with HDR, a lot less than I used to, that’s probably got a lot to do with how much better the dynamic range of the newer cameras is these days.

I’m pretty sure this is called North Wharf, not really sure what was here before, perhaps just a log depot before they got loaded onto boats for China or some other Asian city.

Okahu Pier at Night

Not sure if this place is even called Okahu pier, it’s pretty long and there’s always fisherman at the end of it.

I’m still working on the photos from NZ. I didn’t do much for the first few days back. There’s a bit of snow outside, I was thinking about going out and taking some photos, it’s pretty cold though.

Auckland City Lights

It’s easier to go out in the evenings to take photos, as long as you have a good tripod, you can photograph all night long. Going out in the morning you have a limited amount of time until the bright sun washes out all the colours and shadows and makes everything rather dull. Plus getting out of bed in the early morning is hard thing to do.

Auckland at Speed

If you like the motion blur effect in photos like in this one. Then the easiest way to achieve it is get into a vehicle, I happened to be on a speeding boat when I took this photo. Once in motion make sure you have a reasonably slow shutter speed, nothing higher than 1/60th of a second. Point your camera in the general direction you are going and take some shots, try out some different shutter speeds to get the amount of blur right, the slower the shutter the more blur you will get.

I took this photo on the way back to Auckland one evening we had been out fishing with some friends, it was a highly unsuccessful fishing trip, we spent more time pulling up the anchor than actually fishing, the  anchor winch broke so we had to do it by hand. It still felt good to be out on the sea, I’m not the kind of person that would go off sailing into the big blue ocean, but I do like going out for an hour or 10 on a boat to do some fishing, diving or sailing.

Thinking of Home

I’ve been thinking about New Zealand quite a bit recently. Even though I haven’t lived there for many years now, more than half my life, I still consider it home.

Monument atop One Tree Hill

I find it quite difficult when processing HDR photos to get blue sky right, especially when photographing just after sunset. The colour of the sky is so majestic yet Photomatix has a tendency to make it quite gray.

Glowing Auckland

While waiting in transit in Dubai. I figure it’s a good opportunity to share a photo with you that I just finished editing using photomatix pro and Lightroom, this is a fairly quick edit. I never go much beyond using these two tools. I find that I am starting to use photoshop a little more than I used to and I come to grips with it.
