At ground level

I lay down in the mud to get this photo, it was on the edge of the Ndutu lake in the Serengeti plains. Most wildlife photos are taken from either door level height of a landrover or landcruiser or from a roof hatch. There is an obvious risk getting out of a car and lying down on the ground in any wildlife park, I’ve only done it when plenty of people who I trust are watching out for me and the area is wide open and we have a clear view of what’s around for quite a distance.

Wildesbeests in the mist

I’ve  been into the Ngorongoro crater quite a few times, most mornings there’s normally a mist. However on this morning it stayed for longer than usual. Normally it was gone by the time we got to the crater floor.

Classic African Sunset

The last few months have been pretty hard going with the new job and the changes that has bought on. Today felt like the first day that I’ve managed to stop and think about what I’ve been doing. Going through my lightroom library I came across this photo it made me realise how much I would like to go back to Africa. Perhaps next year.

Happy Hyena

This guy was particularly happy and so were all of his mates, a massive giraffe carcasse and now lions around for a couple of days at least. We went back to this scene many times over a couple of days that we spent in Timbavati, we kept on returning as it was pretty cold and raining a bit, which meant most of the animals weren’t anywhere near water supplies so were impossible to find and see.

Battling Goshawks

This photo was taken quite a few years ago in the Kgalagadi national park in South Africa. A friend of mine is heading there soon, when we visited it was very cold, it got below zero at night and we ended up leaving earlier than planned as it was too cold for us.

Lonely Road

My parents will hopefully be visiting this place very soon, they’re in Etosha at the moment, covering a very similar route to the one we travelled a couple of years ago now.

Thorny Meal

I’ve never quite figured out why elephants enjoy eating Acacia so much, they have to be the sharpest natural occurring thing I have come across. They have gone straight through the bottom of my jandals on hundreds of occasions, horrible things!!

Elephant March

This herd was on the move, probably headed for water but they weren’t stopping for anything.

Sun setting over Okaukeujo

This has to be my favourite waterhole in Etosha, I’ve spent countless hours at it over the years and it’s only a couple of minutes walk from the campsite.
