Modifying photos

I was giving my step dad a lesson with Lightroom the other day and I was showing him what is possible. He then started saying what I was doing is cheating, I said all I’m doing is adjusting shadows, tones and vibrance a little, I don’t misrepresent the scene by adding or removing a part of the photo to make it look completely different. I showed him how it would be easily possible by removing a lamp post with Photoshops content aware fill. I then closed photoshop and didn’t save the photo. While I am fairly liberal in my adjustments in tonal changes. I still don’t like adding or removing something to/from a photo to make the scene look completely different.

For example in this photo I used the radial filter to blur the majority of the photo except the tree.
